Episode 263: “What Is The First Thing You Look For When You Hire Staff?”

Today’s episode was recorded in the MOBE Film Studio in our corporate offices in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. One of our MOBE affiliates wants to know what is the first thing I look for when I am hiring staff.

I talk about the very first characteristic that I look for, above all else, which is attitude.  I explain that I often find that although a candidate may have competent skills for a role, if their attitude isn’t right, they won’t fit in or further develop in the role.

I look for candidates who are upbeat and professional and they must to be able to handle chaotic environments. This is important because our industry is constantly changing and chaotic, and I have to have staff who can react quickly in a changing environment without getting stressed out over the chaos.

I discuss my practice of hiring for a 90 day probationary period in which I get daily updates on what has been accomplished. I explain that 90 days is usually an adequate period of time in which to assess a candidates ability to adapt and to grow.
